Volunteer OpportunitiesThe Historical Society operates by volunteers and is only as good as its participants. Please take a look at the opportunities that we have for you to help to continue in making this Organization one of the best. If you are interested or have questions, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator via email, phone: leave your name and message at (408) 615-2986, or fill out the following online form. Hosts/HostessesWe are looking for volunteers to serve refreshments for the 2010 Santa Clara Historic Home Tour which is scheduled for Friday, December 3 (6-10 PM) and Saturday, December 4 (12 noon-5 PM). This event is co-sponsored by the Harris-Lass House Museum and the Old Quad Residents' Association. Proceeds benefit historic preservation projects and non-profit groups in the City of Santa Clara. Besides refreshments, there will be an opportunity drawing to benefit the Santa Clara Arts & Historical Consortium. Gift WrappersVolunteers from SCCHGS willing to work a 2 hour shift wrapping presents on December 4 at the Barnes & Noble (cor of Stevens Creek & San Tomas) with volunteers from the Friends of the Library. Publicity Committee MembersVolunteers on the publicity committee promote the Society’s activities and bring them to the attention of genealogists and the general public by contacting various outlets (newspapers, community websites, etc) and preparing posters and flyers for upcoming events. Some of the specific duties include preparing flyers for the monthly meetings, mailing the flyers to libraries and other genealogical repositories in the area, assisting the committees in publicizing their activities and maintaining a list of publicity contacts. Technology Committee MembersAre you a “techie”? Do you like working with computers? We are looking for people who can install and update equipment as well as answer questions about its uses. We would like volunteers who are very comfortable with computers, software and peripherals, but you don’t need to be an expert to be on this committee. Newsletter MailersThe Newsletter Mailing Team is looking for people to help fold, tape and label newsletters. They meet in the library from 10:00 a.m. to noon on the third or (sometimes) fourth Friday of each month, except July and November. Indexers of Early BMD recordsOur society is indexing the early Santa Clara County birth, death, and marriage records from microfilm in the library. We’ve made good progress on this project, but there is still a lot of indexing to do. The work will need to be done in the library, but you can set your own hours. Back-Up Program ChairThe Program Chair performs a job vital to the organization. We would like to have a volunteer who can step in if the Program Chair can’t do that job for some reason, such as illness or vacation. The current volunteer is willing to train you now, so that you will have some experience when you are needed. Video TranscribersWe need a volunteer who would be able to watch and create a written transcription of the words spoken in videotaped oral history interviews. Videotapes are usually one to two hours in length. Library has samples of previous transcriptions that can be used as models in formatting the transcript. DVD copies of the videotapes will be loaned to volunteer so they may be taken home to view for transcribing purposes. New Publications CoordinatorThe New Publications Coordinator oversees the work of volunteers who gather and preserve abstracts, indexes and other genealogical records which are posted on our website or published and sold to interested researchers. We are looking for a coordinator and also volunteers to work as typists and checkers for new publications. Connections ReportersOur Connections Editor is looking for members who would like to research and type articles for the bi-yearly publication of historical families, homes and neighborhoods in Santa Clara County. Publications are completed in April and October of each year.
